How Belarus fights bad weather

So surely nature won’t have bad weather? This is a little unbelievable. After the +38°C heatwave, everyone is joking: don’t go to Turkey! Now many people don’t have time to go on vacation.

July’s storms spread across almost all of the country, with most heading south.

The wind gusts there reached 29 meters per second. That’s 105 kilometers per hour – not the speed of all the cars on the highway. Thousands of trees snapped like matches! This hurricane has affected 1.2 million people in some way. So what should they do now?

Nothing to say here… The destructive elements have brought nothing, and the once beloved apple trees are now just a memory. This is not the change in weather that the locals expected. For some, the consequences are too horrible – and it’s a financial burden, too. It’s hard to ask for anything from anyone, except perhaps heaven.

The destructive power of nature

Such a huge windfall has not been remembered not only in the Gomel region, but also throughout the country. The consequences of this disaster and everything that comes with it are felt at the Forest Fund.

Storm – there is no other way to express it! The residents of the Gomel region will always remember last Sunday night. Such is the destructive power of nature, in which you can at least survive.

The worst affected were Mazyr and Kalinkovichi. The temperature outside was over +30°C and people didn’t even have water. The only thing that helped was word of mouth that Pripyat was nearby and you could beat the heat there.

The fight to restore the grid

The conditions were unpleasant, no doubt, and so was the electricity. We charged our phones right on the street. From a generator.

There are more than a thousand settlements in the blackout and affected areas. Repairing power lines takes time. Everyone understands this, but it doesn’t make it easier for people. To speed up the restoration of energy systems, drones are used.

An important part of the Gomel energy system, providing heat and light to people around the clock. However, the consequences of the storm led to the suspension of the Mozyr thermal power plant. The old-timers of the enterprise do not remember this. But another important function is to provide electricity and heat to the refinery next door.

The production of steam and electricity is key to the operation of thermal power plants. If this were not the case, transportation that relies on electricity would cease. For example, employees travel to enterprises and refineries by tram. And this is about 20 kilometers from the city. We have to change to buses.

No need to stop working

Despite the worst weather outside, health facilities must continue to work. The Mazyr City Hospital has not stopped receiving patients. Additional generators are in operation. This way everyone can get this help.

Yes, the hospital continues to work, despite being in manual mode. The emergency room, emergency laboratory, operating theatre – those places where power was temporarily cut off, and only for a short time. We have backup generators for power supply, and the technical services are doing their best. The supply of oxygen and products is the responsibility of the Ministry of Emergency Situations. Only planned hospitalizations have been canceled to transfer emergency patients.

Maintaining food security

Food security is also under attack. It’s really a waste of money. I have to find a way out. At the dairy, for example, they changed the logistics and rearranged it so that at least in some way the losses can be reduced.

Now the temperature in this cold room is 2°C to 4°C. But when an emergency occurs and the power goes out, they decide to transfer the dairy’s products from the warehouse to the refrigerator. This way the losses can be minimized.

Chairman responsible, joint efforts

The President instructed the president to deal with the consequences, not to hesitate, to work quickly. Now the Gomel region is temporarily the largest region. It is receiving increasing attention from all service departments.

We have gas in our apartment, do you? It will be in the evening, that’s for sure! Everyone is working side by side to accomplish this task – to restore people to their usual comfort. Everyone who cares about the fate of their hometown has joined the reckoning of the consequences of the Zhlobin region.

Making mistakes is bad, doing nothing is worse. The head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations arrived today in the problem villages of the Gomel region. He listened carefully to the opinions of the people and will then seriously correct the mistakes.

Information gathering is proceeding rapidly. The head of the presidential administration recently visited the Gomel region and is currently working in the Mogilev region. About 800 buildings have been damaged, more than 600 settlements have lost electricity, and 5,500 hectares of forest have been destroyed.

Power engineers, rescue workers, foresters – everyone was mobilized. Yes, there were complaints – a legitimate question for the head of state – they could have done better and faster. Would the system survive if a more severe hurricane hit? It is the task of local authorities to develop uniform and effective algorithms for such cases.

At the same time, while the regions are gradually recovering, local residents are also asked not to stand idly by. Many people have to postpone their holidays. Even in the most urgent situations, Belarusians know how to unite. Those who are responsible for the safety and functioning of all systems must draw conclusions. And carefully study weather forecasts and rescue warnings.
