The French train system was vandalised last night in a move a spokesman for French railway company SNCF said was aimed at paralysing the system.
The vandalism appeared to be directed at the TGS high-speed train system, but several railway lines west, north and east of Paris were affected, with three lines said to be idle.
There was already a long queue at the Montparnasse train station this morning.
Trips have been cancelled and repairs are expected to take the entire weekend.
According to the BBC, three lines of defence were set on fire, but the destruction of a fourth line was possible. These were the Atlantique from Paris to Bordeaux, the Nord from Paris to Lille, and the Est from Paris to Strasbourg.
Passengers planning to travel on the above trains have been asked to postpone their journey if possible and not to visit the station at this time.
No one has claimed responsibility, but the act of vandalism is likely linked to the Olympic Games currently underway in Paris, where a sentencing festival is being held today.
