“I am writing this from hiding because I fear for my life and freedom, and the freedom of my compatriots, because of the dictatorship led by Nicolás Maduro (Venezuelan president).”
Maduro’s main opponent, Maria Corina Machado, wrote in a newspaper article: The Wall Street Journal.
Machado is the chairman of Maduro’s main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, and was originally Maduro’s presidential candidate in the presidential election.
Maduro’s government in turn banned her from running, and Edmundo González Urrutia became the party’s presidential candidate instead.
Gonzalez says he won the election
In the article, Machado reiterated that Edmundo González was the legitimate winner, saying that he won 67% of the votes based on the results records from 80% of all polling stations across the country, which she claimed to have.
Venezuela’s National Electoral Council, composed only of members of Maduro’s party, announced that Maduro received 51.2% of the vote, while Gonzalez received 44.2%.
In many places, state leaders have questioned the results and called for independent observers to be allowed to count the votes.
Venezuela’s National Electoral Council has yet to release a detailed breakdown of the election results.
Maduro wants to jail them
Maduro has asked the Supreme Court to rule on the election, saying he has proof of victory and is “ready to provide 100 percent of the data.”
“You have blood on your hands,” Maduro said Wednesday, referring to Gonzalez and Machado. “They should be in jail.”
Machado wrote in his article that most of the opposition is now in hiding.
“As I write these words, I could be arrested,” Machado wrote, calling on those who support democracy and oppose dictatorship to support the Venezuelan people.
