Hezbollah fired hundreds of rockets and drones into Israel on Sunday night in retaliation for the killing of a senior commander in Beirut last month.
According to the Iranian-backed group, the attack was carried out using drones and more than 320 Katyusha missiles that hit 11 targets of the Tel Aviv army. On the other hand, the Israeli army said it succeeded in minimizing the attack by striking dozens of Hezbollah bases. About 100 Israeli warplanes attacked 40 Hezbollah bases in southern Lebanon.
This is considered one of the most serious clashes since the war between Israel and Hamas broke out in Gaza. Hezbollah considered the attack successful but did not disclose further details. Israel’s wartime cabinet met at 7 am to deal with the situation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would do everything to protect his country.
Israel declared a state of emergency and flights to and from Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport were suspended for about 90 minutes. So far, no victims have been reported from the attack. The escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has raised concerns about a wider regional conflict that could involve the United States and Iran.
US President Biden announced that he is gradually monitoring the developments. In Cairo, Egypt, new efforts are being made to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza war.
