GermanyFor some time now, the City of Brussels has removed hundreds of waste containers from the Rue des Densards, Halle Saint-Germain and other popular locations in the capital. As we learned in our Bruzz column on Monday, this decision was taken after an in-depth analysis of the cleaning services.
François Descamps, spokesman for cleaning consultant Zoubida Jellab (Ecolo), said the analysis showed that certain bins acted as magnets for illegal dumping of waste rather than being truly used for their intended purpose. “We found diapers, green waste and even household waste in these bins,” the spokesman said.
Split measures
Not all residents and merchants are convinced by the decision. According to them, more trash cans are needed to keep the streets clean. The city government says the measure has been well received in other areas, such as Marrolles and Neder-over-Heembeek.
Public rubbish bins have also been added in other locations around the city, including along major roads and schools. It is not yet clear exactly how many bins are affected.
