Algerians suffered the highest number of visa rejections on the African continent in 2023. According to data collected by the Schengen Information website, our compatriots face a particularly high rejection rate.

France, the preferred destination for many Algerians, rejected more than half of the applications (56%). Algeria is therefore the second country with the highest number of visa refusals by France, after Turkey. With 93,151 negative decisions, France is the main obstacle to the mobility of Algerians in the Schengen area.

Gérald Darmanin Broken Promises

In the fall of 2021, Paris decided to restrict the issuance of visas in an effort to encourage more cooperation from Algiers on the issue of illegal immigration.

But French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced the restoration of the “ Normal consular relations » With Algeria.

However, this statement has been difficult to implement on the ground, raising doubts about whether France truly wants to re-establish peaceful relations with Algeria.

Other countries that deny Algerians Schengen visas

Among the five countries where Algerian citizens were denied visas the most last year, France ranked first, followed by Spain (41,993 refusals), Italy (10,453 refusals), Malta (3,528 refusals) and Belgium (3,483 refusals).

These five Schengen Area member states alone account for 91.7% of the total 166,260 visa denials to Algerians in 2023.

These rejections are not without impact on the finances of the Algerians, given that the request has been granted. The cost of these editions is 13 million euros in 2023. These losses are mainly due to non-refundable processing fees.

The situation is even more worrying when we know that the centers responsible for collecting visa applications will increase these fees until they reach 90 euros for adults and 45 euros for children aged 6 to 12 years.
