Shaïna Hansye, a teenager of Mauritian origin living in France, who was stabbed and burned to death by her ex-boyfriend D. and his accomplice in November 2019, can now rest in peace. Her 21-year-old ex-husband and his 20-year-old accomplice, both tried for serious violence and theft of a 15-year-old girl’s mobile phone, were sentenced yesterday at the Court of Senlis. D. was sentenced to 20 months in prison, of which 6 months were suspended, and his accomplice was sentenced to 12 months of simple probation. As D. has already spent 14 months in pre-trial detention, he will not be sent back to prison. The two men are prohibited from carrying weapons, having any contact with civil parties and are also prohibited from being present in Creil. In addition, they cannot communicate with each other for two years.
D. is far from an altar boy. According to French media reports, before Shaïna Hansye’s murder, he was arrested in August 2017 for sexually assaulting a young woman and was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended and probation in 2023. Six months before attacking Shaïna Hansye and killing her, D tried to steal her phone to delete threatening messages he had sent her, even though he was banned from contacting her. On the same day, he and his accomplices threatened and beat the teenager.
On Tuesday, he took the stand again in court during the hearing, which was held behind closed doors for nearly six hours in a tense atmosphere, under the watchful eyes of the teenager’s relatives, especially his brother Yassin, who has been particularly devoted to protecting his sister’s memory since the tragedy. During the hearing, D. refused to speak and insulted his colleagues, the civil party’s lawyers. He and his accomplices were accused of disrespecting the court. In addition, D allegedly disappeared during the recess and did not attend the end of the proceedings.
The conviction marks the end of a long legal journey for Shaïna Hansye’s family.
