Children who follow in the footsteps of accomplished parents often don’t have it easy. Often, they are measured and judged by their parents’ successes, whether in sports or the arts. This isn’t always fair. In family businesses, the problem is especially acute when the younger generation takes the helm and the older generation refuses to let go.

The political situation in Cambodia is similar. Over the past three decades, the way political power is exercised has gradually changed. Starting with the party dictatorship of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party, the country first turned into a typical one-man dictatorship and then into a family business. Former Prime Minister Hun Sen no longer holds the power alone, and his children are gradually becoming more important. The Hun Sen family is preparing to form a political dominance in Cambodia that has never been seen in Southeast Asia since the Suharto era in Indonesia.
