Muscat: The Ministry of Health (MoH) has started preparations to localise “heart transplant services” as part of the National Organ Transplant Programme 2023-2025.

In this context, the National Organ Transplant Program’s Technical Committee for Heart Transplantation held its first meeting on Monday under the chairmanship of Health Minister Dr Hilal bin Ali Al-Sabti.

The purpose of the meeting was to prepare Oman for the introduction of heart transplants. The meeting also discussed the medical and surgical equipment and human resources required for these operations and to begin establishing a national waiting list for heart failure patients.

Dr. Ahmed bin Saeed Al Busaidi, director of the National Organ Transplant Program, said the preparation of localized heart transplant services is part of the country’s efforts to strengthen and develop health services provided to citizens.

The program aims to provide all available means and solutions to save the lives of patients with organ failure, thereby improving community health, individual well-being and overall quality of life.

It is worth mentioning that the National Organ Transplant Program has opened the option of posthumous heart donation through the Ministry of Health’s Shifa application.
