More and more people are doing medical consultations online. This is because they don’t have time, or they have a friend, brother or doctor acquaintance. In addition, others go to the pharmacy, they explain their problems or go to buy medicines without consultation. Does this way of doing things have an impact on health?
For illnesses like diarrhea, headaches, fatigue, or even malaria, many people don’t go to the doctor. You either call a health worker you know or go to a pharmacy to buy medicine to treat your illness.
“Personally, I always have products like metronidazole, painkillers, albendazole, paracetamol in my house. I buy them without consultation. I go to the pharmacy, say what I want and they serve me. I do this because I have a strange stomach. There are certain foods, which, when I eat, give me diarrhea. Therefore, these products help me when I have stomach problems. I don’t have to go to the doctor every time I have diarrhea due to a bad diet. On the other hand, if the diarrhea persists after taking the products, I go to the hospital for consultation. But in general, when I take metronidazole and painkillers, I no longer have problems,” explains Ahua Guira.
“I have an elder brother who is a doctor. Often when I don’t feel well and cannot go to the hospital. I call him or write to him. I explain the symptoms to him and he prescribes medicine for me. Since he is a doctor, I have confidence in his diagnosis and this saves me from having to travel. The products he prescribes to me usually work well for me. But if by chance I have to do an in-depth test, I will do it,” said Ibrahim Keita.
Comments from Dr. Abdallah Ouédraogo
According to doctor Abdallah Ouédraogo, a consultation requires following steps, such as asking questions, measuring constants, and physical examination. Not all of these steps can be done over the phone. Without these steps, it is difficult to make a good diagnosis.
For him, medical consultations over the phone or online can have health consequences. “Because if the diagnosis is wrong due to lack of physical examination and continuous monitoring, then the prescribed treatment will be ineffective or even dangerous. Because there may be symptoms due to an increase or decrease in these parameters. Therefore, if these parameters are not known, it will not help in diagnosis,” said the doctor.
He added: “Some medicines can be paid directly at the pharmacy, while others require a prescription. But the best way for patients is to consult a doctor first and then go to the pharmacy. You should ask if it is diarrhea, fatigue or headache. Because they all have different causes, these causes must be determined first so that the best treatment can be taken.”
