Australian cycling has suffered a severe blow with two-time Olympic silver medallist Matthew Richardson having to switch nationality and represent Great Britain at international events.
The British-born sprinter represented Australia at the recent Olympics and won three medals in Paris: silver in the men’s keirin and sprint, and bronze in the men’s team sprint with Matt Glaetzer and Leigh Hoffman.

After his success in Paris, Richardson recently discovered that his application to change his nationality for future competition had been approved by the International Cycling Union.
The sprint star said it was a difficult decision and he thanked Cycling Australia, his coaches and teammates for their contribution to his career.
“Changing my nationality was a difficult decision and one I did not make lightly,” Richardson said.
“I have the utmost respect for Australia and the Australian Cycling Team, which will always be a part of my life. As I begin this new chapter in my life, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the coaches and support staff I have worked with over the years in Australia.
“I want to give a huge thank you to my teammates for everything we’ve been through together. You’ve been through the highs and lows with me and I’m so grateful for all the support, laughs and hard work we’ve shared together.
“I hope you will understand and support me as I continue to do my best in the sport I love.”
