The Judiciary and Governmental Affairs Committee approved the proposed bill, which would make Palau’s aircraft rescue firefighters eligible for the same hazard pay differential as police officers.

The bill has passed the Senate on its third and final reading and has been sent to the House for consideration.

House Bill No. 11-119-12S HD1 seeks to expand hazard pay payments to state employees performing hazardous duty, including aircraft rescue firefighters.

“Firefighters employed by the Aircraft Rescue Firefighter Department (ARFF) face hazardous conditions similar to those of Department of Public Safety firefighters, but are currently not eligible for special hazardous duty differential pay. This bill seeks to correct this problem by ensuring that ARFF firefighters are eligible for such pay under certain circumstances,” the bill states.

The committee expressed support for the bill. Under the hazard pay provision, rescue firefighters would be eligible for up to 25% of their adjusted base pay. (By Bernadette Carreon)
