Harris receives strong support after Biden resigns – Sydsvenskan

About half an hour after President Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of his reelection campaign, he also announced his support for the vice president as the incoming presidential candidate.

Harris herself immediately announced that she was ready to take over.

“I am honored to have the president’s endorsement, and my goal is to earn and win the nomination,” Harris said in a statement.

The vice president was later joined by several top Democrats.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has been mentioned in speculation about a new presidential candidate, wrote on X that Harris is the right person to take on Donald Trump.

Even Pete Buttigieg, who had challenged Biden and Harris for the nomination in 2020, announced his support. Similarly, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, known as one of the progressive voices in the party, also endorsed the vice president.

“Now more than ever, it is critical that our party and our country quickly unite to defeat Donald Trump and the threats to American democracy,” she wrote.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, all from the key swing state, also expressed support.

Democratic leadership said in a statement that the American people will soon know what the process for nominating a new presidential candidate will look like.

“The party will begin an open and orderly process to stand up as a unified party with a candidate who can defeat Donald Trump in November,” Chairman Jaime Harrison wrote in a statement.

The Democratic convention, which will formally select the presidential candidate, will be held in Chicago from August 19 to 22.

According to the Associated Press, delegates to the convention appointed by North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee have decided to support Harris after a quick meeting.
