Pago Pago, American Samoa— Thursday, July 4th is a public holiday in American Samoa to commemorate the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence. All government offices are closed and normal activities are suspended.
In a press release issued earlier, Governor Lemanu PS Mauga said: “The Fourth of July is of great significance as it is a day when we come together to celebrate the birth of our great nation and the principles upon which this nation was founded.
“I encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the journey and sacrifices of our forefathers who fought for the freedoms we now enjoy.”
The highlight of this special day is Bluesky’s Fautasi competition – $10,000 for first place, $8,000 for second place, $6,000 for third place, and $4,000 for fourth place and below.
It is reported that nine fautasi have competed so far, including Manulele Tausala “Lowrider”, the winner of the American Samoa Flag Day Fautasi Regatta in 2024. Others completing the line-up are: Eagle, Lupelele, Manulele Tausala II, Iseula o le Moana, Matasaua, Paepaeulupoo, Fealofani Samoa and Fuao.
The race will start at 7:30 a.m. and will be 3 miles long. Depending on weather conditions, the race schedule may be changed, such as a shorter race or a later start time.
Hoping to achieve the dream of a “perfect start” – the race committee boat will signal the start of the race by switching from red to green flags. At the same time, each fautasi skipper will carry a VHF radio and sound the horn.
Bluesky’s Fautasi Race Committee includes Bluesky CEO Justin Tuiasosopo, Harbor Master Puamavae Ah-Mai and American Samoa Rowing Association President Louis Solaita. The committee is assisted by the Port Authority, NOAA Weather Station, Marine Patrol, DMWR and Tim Teleso.
The Blue Sky Communications Fata West Regatta is part of the company’s 25th anniversary in the Northern Territory.
July 4th is a day off, and people go back to work on Friday, July 5th.
Wishing you a safe and enjoyable holiday in American Samoa.
