Hamas, the Palestinian terror group that rules the Gaza Strip, has announced the start of consultations on a new leader for the movement, who will succeed Ismail Haniya, who was killed in an Israeli raid this week.
The Hamas leader was killed in an attack in Tehran late Wednesday as he was traveling to attend the inauguration of Iran’s new president, Massoud Pezeshkian. Both Iran and Hamas have vowed to retaliate for his killing.
US news channel CNN reported on Thursday, citing unnamed sources, that Haniyeh was killed by the detonation of an explosive device that had been hidden for weeks in the residence where he usually stayed during his stay in Tehran.
According to CNN sources, the bomb was hidden in Hanija’s room two months ago and detonated remotely while he was at home.
However, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed in their latest statement that Israel assassinated Haniya with a “short-range missile” fired from somewhere in front of his Tehran residence, AFP reported on Saturday.
The New York Times reported on Friday that Iran has detained more than two dozen senior officials following Haniyeh’s killing in response to a serious failure of Iran’s security forces that resulted in Haniyeh’s death. The New York Times cited two unnamed Iranian officials familiar with the investigation in its report.
Reuters reported this.
