According to Palestinian militants, these were two separate incidents in which one male hostage was killed and two female hostages were seriously injured. The incidents occurred at a time when a big question mark still hangs over the peace talks between the two sides.
The report, obtained by The Times, said that “in two separate incidents, two soldiers guarding enemy prisoners shot and killed a Zionist prisoner, killing him instantly, and seriously wounded two female hostages.”
The announcement came shortly after the Palestinian group named Yahya Sinwar, one of the men behind the October 7 attack on Israel, as its new leader. This followed the killing of former leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31.
Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee said in Arabic last night: “The terrorist Hamas has issued a written statement claiming that in two separate incidents, Hamas activists killed an Israeli hostage and injured two female hostages. There is no intelligence document to confirm or deny Hamas. We will continue to investigate the credibility of the statement and share the information we have.”
The incident came amid conflicting reports about negotiations planned for Thursday to end the Gaza war. On Sunday, Hamas cast doubt on its participation in the expected talks.
Palestinian militants took 251 people hostage in the October 7 attack, of whom 111 remain in Gaza and 39 are believed to have been killed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
An Israeli airstrike on Saturday killed around 100 people inside a school building in Gaza City that housed displaced Palestinian families.
Israel said on Monday that 31 militants were among the dead. Hamas and Islamic Jihad denied Israel’s claim and said there were no militants in the school.
