Hamas named Gaza Strip Chief Yahya Sinwar as its new political leader on Tuesday following the killing of predecessor Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week, a move that heightened tensions in the region.
“The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas announces the election of its leader Yahya Sinwar as chairman of the movement’s political bureau,” the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas said in a statement.
Minutes after the statement was released, the Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, said it had fired a barrage of rockets into Israel from the Gaza Strip.
Israeli military and officials accuse Sinwar of being one of the masterminds of the October 7 attacks on Israel, making him one of Israel’s most wanted terrorists.
Less than a week after Haniyeh was killed in Tehran, he was named the new leader of Hamas.
Iran and Hamas have accused Israel of assassinating Mohammed. Israel has refused to comment on the assassination.
The Hamas attack on October 7 killed 1,198 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.
The militants also captured 251 people during the raid, 111 of whom remain in captivity in Gaza, while the military said 39 had died.
Israel’s retaliatory military operations in Gaza have so far killed at least 39,653 people, according to the Ministry of Health in the Hamas-controlled area, but the ministry did not provide specific details on the deaths of civilians and militants.
