Haiti’s new government hopes to bring security and stability to gang-ravaged island

According to the United Nations, more than 2,500 people have been killed or injured in Haiti in the past few months.

Haiti has formed a new government in an attempt to restore security and stability to the Caribbean island nation, which has been ravaged by gang violence. Two weeks after the interim government council named Gary Cornier as interim prime minister, the decree on the appointment of new cabinet members was published in the official gazette, AFP reported on Tuesday, according to TASS.

Cornier, who briefly led a government in Haiti more than a decade ago, arrived in Haiti on June 1 and until recently was abroad serving as UNICEF’s director for Latin America and the Caribbean, a position he has held since January 2023.

Violence in Haiti erupted on February 29 when gunmen took over a police station, opened fire at Port-au-Prince’s airport and stormed Haiti’s two largest prisons, freeing more than 4,000 inmates. Since then, gangs have been attacking previously peaceful communities, leaving thousands homeless.

According to UN statistics, more than 2,500 people were killed or injured in Haiti from January to March this year, an increase of more than 50% over the same period last year.

The United Nations estimates that nearly 5 million people in Haiti are currently facing severe food insecurity, a situation where the inability to eat enough food poses a direct threat to a person’s life or threatens the supply of their living needs.

Haiti has been without a functioning parliament and head of state since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021. At the end of April, after the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, a nine-member Transitional Government Council took over and was responsible for organizing elections. She should hand over the executive power of the country to the new government and president no later than February 7, 2026.
