P-au-P, August 14, 2024 (AlterPresse) – The alleged misunderstandings between Haiti and the Dominican Republic will serve as the basis for the refusal of the highest Haitian authorities to travel to the neighboring country to attend the swearing-in ceremony – of the upcoming re-election of President Louis Abinader, as observed by AlterPresse.
According to local media reports, Haitian authorities refused to attend the swearing-in ceremony because flying from Haiti to the Dominican Republic requires passing through another country due to the unilateral decision of the Dominican authorities to close its airspace.

AlterPresse consulted Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez on his X account (formerly Twitter), who wanted to clarify the details of Haiti’s invitation to President Abinader to take the oath of office.
He reported that he had a telephone conversation with Haitian Prime Minister Dominique Dupuy, during which he assured that “any flight request from the Haitian authorities would be immediately approved, as would requests from other invited dignitaries.”
Dupuy’s response was swift. She told the Haitian media that the Dominican Republic’s measures should not only involve officials, but all citizens without exception.
For her, Haitian authorities should never benefit from “privileges” to which the Haitian people are not entitled.
A point of no return
The absence of high-level Haitian representatives at the swearing-in of Luis Abinader on August 16, 2024, now seems irreversible.
In certain circles, some Dominicans consider it unfortunate, even “shameful,” that diplomatic relations between the two island nations have reached such a critical stage.
Others took the opportunity to fiercely criticize Haiti, saying it showed it was “ungrateful” to its neighbors.
For its part, it warmly welcomed Haiti’s response to the Dominican Republic’s invitation to Haiti to attend the inauguration of President Louis Abinader.
This is an important factor in the Haitian government’s quest for sympathy among the people, whose expectations have been far from met since the transition began last April.

Jacqueline Charles of the Miami Herald wrote on her X account that members of the Presidential Transition Council (Cpt) and Prime Minister Gary Cornell may reject the invitation from the Dominican Republic to attend the inauguration of Luis Abinader.
“The idea of taking a plane across the border, or going to Miami to the Dominican Republic, when ordinary Haitians can’t cross the border even with a visa, does not sit well with transition leaders,” she continued.
The Haitian transitional authorities have not yet issued an official notification on the matter.
Dominican authorities announced on Thursday, September 14, 2023, the closure of the entire Haitian-Dominican border. (land, sea and air), starting at 6:00 a.m. (10:00 GMT) on Friday, September 15, 2023.
