Los Angeles (USA) – American film legend Gena Rowlands, who died on Wednesday at the age of 94, had a career in the Hollywood entertainment industry that spanned more than 60 years.
Rowlands died at her home in Indian Wells, California, surrounded by her family, the specialist newspaper Variety reported, as confirmed by the office of her son’s agent, film director Nick Cassavetes.
The legendary Hollywood actress, who was nominated for Oscars for A Woman Under the Influence (1974) and Gloria (1980), is currently being directed by her ex-husband, film director John Cassavetes. She died in 1989.
Her son, also a director, publicly revealed last June that his mother suffers from Alzheimer’s in an interview with Weekly Entertainment, in which he recalled their collaboration during the filming of The Notebook, in which Roland played a woman with Alzheimer’s.
In the film, which marks the twentieth anniversary of its big screen debut, the actress plays Allie, a more adult version of the same character played by Rachel McAdams.
Cassavetes’ grandmother, actress Mrs. Rowlands, also suffered from Alzheimer’s, and her struggles inspired Gina to play Ellie in “The Notebook,” based on the Nicholas Sparks novel.
The American actress, best known for her collaboration on 10 films with her late husband, actor-director John Cassavetes, has won four Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards in her more than six-decade career.
Her last role in a feature film was in Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks (2014), co-starring Cheyenne Jackson. Efei
