According to a note, “the Albert Mangones Award consists of an honorary plaque and a series of research-creative works that may include books, paintings, sculptures, documentaries, video games and music that interpret the cultural heritage of the Haitian Revolution” from the Virtual Museum of the Haitian Revolution (Mvrh), which is launching the Albert Mangones Award in partnership with the Museum of the Haitian Revolution (Mcc), the National Institute for the Protection of Heritage (Ispan), the UNESCO Chair in History and Heritage at the State University of Haiti (Cuhp-Ueh), and the Haitian Institute for African Studies (Ierah).
The award, established in memory of architect and sculptor Albert Mangonès, publicly recognizes a person or organization for its contribution to the preservation of a building, site or historic artifact associated with the Haitian Revolution.
It therefore highlights the importance of individual and institutional contributions to preserving the memory and ideals of the Haitian Revolution.
The Virtual Museum of the Haitian Revolution recommends to the President of the Republic the recipients of the National Order of Honor and the Order of Merit.
He believes that Frédéric Mangones and Patrick Delatour are living treasures of humanity and carry an important part of the history and memory of the Haitian people.
“They have dedicated fifty years of their lives to the conservation of monuments and sites associated with the Haitian Revolution. Their knowledge and skills contribute to a better interpretation of our collective identity. These sites they have helped to protect are among the most iconic in the country. （1） Haitian architect and sculptor Albert Mangonès was born in Port-au-Prince on March 26, 1917 and died in Port-au-Prince on April 25, 2002 at the age of 85.
Albert Mangonès, who trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and at Cornell University in New York (studying architecture between 1939 and 1942),2 was one of the founders of the Port-au-Prince Art Center in 1944. Role in the discovery of the Haitian popular painters.
In 1968, Mangones created a sculpture that symbolizes Haitian history: the Nameless Maroon Monument (Nèg mawon in Creole).
Albert Mangonès was one of the pioneers in the protection of Haiti’s monumental heritage. He created the Service for the Protection of Monuments and Historic Sites in 1972, which was replaced in 1979 by a new organization, the National Institute for the Protection of Heritage (Ispan).
He is involved in the restoration of the Citadel of La Ferrière in northern Haiti, as well as the historic national park (including the Sanssouci Palace and La Mire ruins), which are listed as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
In 1989, the United Nations Postal Administration issued a series of stamps commemorating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, featuring works by José Clemente Orozco, Wassily Kandinsky, Mary Cassatt, Käthe Kollwitz, Raphael and Albert Mangonez.
