The next Sabah election is expected to be held next year, but tensions have arisen between the various component parties of the National Alliance over the state election competition.
(New Standard Time) – Earlier, PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the PN leadership would decide whether the alliance would contest the Sabah election.
The Maran MP made the remarks despite a call by the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), a component of the Sabah Perikatan Nasional coalition, for opposition parties nationwide not to participate in the state election.
“We will decide (whether to contest the upcoming election), not them,” he told reporters briefly after a meeting of the Perikatan Nasional-led state governments (SG4).
Yesterday, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Yong Teck Lee reiterated that national political parties should not interfere in state elections.
Mr Yeoh said the PKR is also part of the GRS Sabah (GRS), which will contest on behalf of the ruling coalition in Sabah in the next Sabah election.
When asked whether PAS would contest in the Sabah state election, Abdul Hadi said the matter was still under discussion within the party.
When asked again whether PN would work with GRS, Abdul Hadi said they would consider what was best for the party.
The 16th Sabah election will be held in September 2020. The current state assembly will be automatically dissolved in October next year, after which a state election will be held within 60 days.
