The government of Guyana today called for an independent verification of the will of the Venezuelan people following Sunday’s controversial election in which both President Nicolas Maduro and the opposition claimed victory.

Elections are the exercise of the people’s constitutional right to elect the government of their choice through a free, fair and transparent process. All are expected to ensure the integrity of the electoral process through the highest standards of accountability, transparency and strict adherence to the rule of law, including electoral rules, in order to guarantee respect for the will of the people.
Guyana therefore supports the call for a transparent process to verify the will of the Venezuelan people as exercised on July 28, 2024. The Venezuelan people deserve no less.
