By Denis Chabrol (Demerara Waves) Guyana on Tuesday backed growing calls from the international community for a verification of voting in Venezuela’s disputed presidential election, even as divisions remain within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) over support for declaring Nicolás Maduro the winner.

“Guyana therefore supports the call for a transparent verification of the will exercised by the Venezuelan people on July 28, 2024. The Venezuelan people deserve no less,” the Guyana government said in a statement.

President Irfaan Ali said that “we will not comment on whether the electoral process was fair or not”. He told the closing press conference of the Caribbean Community Summit that Guyana agrees with the international community’s call for the “activation” of the electoral process. “Our statement is factual. That is, every mechanism provided for in the electoral system must be followed and if there is a call, there is a call from the international community and the opposition to activate a certain aspect of the electoral process, we support that call because it is part of the electoral system,” he said.

The Guyana government said that elections are the people’s exercise of their constitutional right to elect a government of their choice through a free, fair and transparent process. “All are expected to ensure the integrity of the electoral process through the highest standards of accountability, transparency and strict adherence to the rule of law, including electoral rules, to ensure respect for the will of the people,” the statement said.
