CMC-Guyana began loading relief supplies for Grenada on Tuesday after Hurricane Beryl struck the small Caribbean island of Grenada on Monday. At least three people died Its sister island, Carriacou, also suffered severe damage.
The Civil Defense Committee (CDC) said its staff and members of the CDC volunteer team packed relief supplies for Grenadian residents, including tarpaulins, chain saws, generators, batteries, flashlights, safety vests, hygiene products, water purification tablets and collapsible water bottles.
President Irfaan Ali on Tuesday released photos of a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) SkyVan transport plane loaded with various items, hours after Grenada’s Prime Minister Deacon Mitchell said he was expecting a plane from Guyana to arrive with much-needed supplies.
“As far as Guyana is concerned, the plane is already loaded,” Mitchell said at a press conference ahead of a virtual meeting of Caribbean Community leaders. “Even if the plane lands in Carriacou, we have to be able to move within Carriacou, so we want to make sure that we do that first so that when relief supplies arrive through the airport or the port, we can actually get them to the villages within the island.”
Mitchell said he had specifically requested helicopter assistance because it was an “urgent need” to access Lake Carriacou, where almost all buildings had been razed to the ground, telecommunications services had been cut and heavy machinery was out of fuel.

The prime minister said one person was killed when a tree fell on a house as Hurricane Beryl struck the Grenada archipelago. Two others died in Carriacou, he said.
Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent and the Grenadines said one person had died on its sister island of Bequia and more deaths were expected.
Gonsalves said President Ali had promised to send a certain amount of construction materials to Kingston.
