The Costa Rican Football Federation (FCRF) has confirmed in a brief press release that Gustavo Alfaro is no longer the head coach of the Costa Rican men’s national football team. “The FCRF informs that head coach Gustavo Alfaro has decided to resign as coach of the Costa Rican national team and as a member of the coaching staff, effective today. We thank Mr. Alfaro and his team for their dedication during his tenure,” the federation said.
During Alfaro’s 281 days in office, he coached 11 games, achieving 5 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses, averaging 1.45 goals scored and 1.22 goals conceded per game.
Among Alfaro’s achievements were a 3-0 loss to Panama in the Nations League and a 3-0 defeat to Colombia in the Copa America group stage. His most notable victory was a 4-0 win over St. Kitts and Nevis in the first knockout match at the National Stadium.
The ongoing challenge for the national team is to maintain continuity. After the Copa America, there were rumors that Alfaro was being courted by other national teams. Paraguay later confirmed their interest in signing him. Despite the rumors, earlier this week FCRF president Osael Maroto confirmed that Alfaro is still part of the national team.
Alfaro’s departure brought financial benefits to the Costa Rican Football Association, as Paraguay and Alfaro had to pay the association nearly $400,000 in compensation. Paraguay reportedly offered Alfaro five times his salary in Costa Rica, which prompted him to decide to accept a new challenge.
As of now, the former “La Sele” coach has not publicly commented on his departure or his next move. Meanwhile, the Costa Rican Football Federation has begun searching for a new coach to lead the team through the upcoming challenges in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.
“At FCRF, we will continue to prepare for the 2026 World Cup. We will keep fans informed and reiterate our commitment to the development and success of national football,” the federation added.
