Addis Ababa, June 24, 2024 (Address) More than a dozen people were killed in shootings in two cities in the Dagestan region of Russia’s North Caucasus.
Gunmen attacked two Russian Orthodox churches, a synagogue and a police post in the cities of Makhachkala and Derbent, killing at least 15 police and National Guard officers, several civilians and an Orthodox priest.
Sunday’s attack reportedly left 12 people injured.
So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, although the region’s governor, Sergei Melikov, said in a video message: “We know who is behind the terrorist attack and what goals they are pursuing.”

During the attack, six gunmen were killed while the remaining were hunted down by security forces in the area.
According to TRT World, the region declared a three-day mourning period, with flags flying at half-mast and all entertainment activities cancelled.
A similar attack took place three months ago, when more than 133 people were killed by gunmen at a rock concert at the Krokus City Hall in the Moscow suburb of Moscow.
Last October, hundreds of people stormed the airport in the region’s capital, Makhachkala, to protest against a flight that landed from Israel.
