LONDON, August 21 (AP): Manchester City and Ilkay Gundogan are about to be reunited.
The former Germany midfielder was seen at the airport on Wednesday as he reportedly flew from Barcelona to Manchester to return to City on a one-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.
Neither City nor Barcelona have commented publicly on any deal for the 33-year-old Gundogan.
Gundogan left City at the end of the 2022-23 season, during which he captained the club to win the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble. He spent seven years at the English club but decided to move to Barcelona for a new challenge, having been one of Xavi Hernandez’s favourite players during his only season at the Catalan club.
But Barcelona’s fragile financial situation appears to have forced new coach Hansi Flick to part ways with the experienced midfielder.
Gundogan’s exit should help Barcelona register new midfielder Dani Olmo, but due to the Spanish league’s financial rules requiring clubs to balance wage and transfer spending with available assets, Barcelona is currently unable to do so.
In addition to Olmo, Barcelona also has a deep lineup in the creative midfield positions, including Pedri Gonzalez, Frenkie de Jong, Fermin Lopez, and Gavi Paes who just recovered from a serious leg injury.
Gundogan, who captained Germany at the recent European Championships, retired from international football this week.
