Infrastructure that China is currently helping to build includes an 8.2-kilometer, $14.8 million highway connecting the airport to the town of Safim. Upcoming projects include a conference center, about 300 kilometers of road rehabilitation, and a university campus that can accommodate 12,000 students. Education is another important area of cooperation, with China providing government scholarships and training opportunities for promising scholars in Guinea-Bissau.
The two countries established diplomatic relations in March 1974, and it took several months for the rest of the world to recognize Guinea-Bissau’s declaration of independence from Portugal.
