Tourism Bureau deputy director Zheng Weidong said yesterday that the government is studying whether it is possible to make it mandatory for all swimming pools to have lifeguards.
Speaking to newspaper Euromen, the official stressed that the pool safety guidelines concern not only hotels but also pools outside hotels, namely sports and municipal facilities, where lifeguards are already mandatory.
Zheng Weidong made the statement after a 12-year-old child was found dead in a swimming pool at a Coloane hotel on Sunday. The official pointed out that there was no lifeguard in the pool at the time of the incident, but the hotel had a warning notice stating that children under 16 years old need parental supervision.
To this end, the person in charge pointed out that the hotel did not violate the swimming pool safety guidelines.
