Guam, Nauru Airlines discuss ‘enhanced connectivity’ to boost economic growth

In an effort to bring more aviation options to Guam and “open up opportunities,” government officials from the U.S. territory and Nauru are discussing a potential air services agreement.

Air Nauru currently operates routes from Nauru to Brisbane, Australia, Palau, Pohnpei, the Marshall Islands, Kiribati and Fiji.

In June this year, at the 26th Micronesia Forum (MIF) hosted by Guam, member states passed a resolution agreeing to send a unified voice to the US federal government, requesting its assistance in enhancing the competitiveness of airlines in the Pacific region.

The Guam Governor’s Office said in a statement that discussions involved the possibility of expanding routes to Guam and the possibility of launching direct flights from Guam to Brisbane.

Guam’s strong position as a hub for Micronesia means increased air service could have a ripple effect, enhancing connectivity and economic opportunities throughout the region, the report said.

Nauru Governor Leon Guerrero said Air Nauru operated flights to Guam in the 1990s and early 2000s.

“In keeping with our stated goal at Micronesia International Airshow to increase air transport service to Guam and the Micronesia region, we are pleased to continue discussions with Air Nauru to seek to expand its service in our region,” she said.

“Expanding air service options is good for our people and can create opportunities to diversify our tourism base, thereby boosting economic growth, resilience and competitiveness.”

Guerrero held talks with Nauru Aviation Deputy Minister Maverick E’ao and other Nauruan officials during the 26th Nauru International Trade Forum and invited them to return to Guam for further dialogue.

Guam Lieutenant Governor Joshua Tenorio said it was “early days,” but “these are very important steps to test the feasibility of other airlines, such as Air Nauru, flying to Guam.”

“Connecting Australia and Guam will help boost our tourism industry and add another travel market to our existing visitor base.

He added: “Because of this great potential, not only did we have Guam airport officials traveling with us, we also asked the Guam Visitors Bureau to meet with these officials while they are still on Guam.”
