KUWAIT CITY, July 22 (Xinhua) — The Kuwaiti and Saudi Arabian project management committees approved the results of the financial, economic, technical and social feasibility studies of the railway connection project between the two countries, which aims to transport passengers and freight.
Government sources revealed that “preliminary design” work is currently underway and will be launched as soon as the necessary procedures are completed, and international companies will be invited to participate.
Sources said the actual implementation of the project will begin in 2026. Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are conducting mutual visits and meetings regarding the upcoming works and inspecting the project sites to resolve any obstacles.
Sources said the railway is expected to transport an average of 3,300 passengers per day in six round trips with a high-speed running time of one hour and 40 minutes, covering a total distance of about 500 kilometers.
Train fares between the two countries will be cheap, comparable to air and car travel in terms of speed and cost.
The source reiterated the desire to speed up this important project, which will strengthen sustainable railway links, economic integration and trade between the two countries.
The source confirmed that the Kuwait-Saudi link is separate from the Gulf Link project, while saying that the railway will start from the Shadadia region and extend to Riyadh.
According to the project plan, the project is expected to be completed within four years and is one of a series of projects between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia aimed at promoting economic integration and strengthening the historical relations between the two countries.
The Council of Ministers has directed the Ministry of Works and other relevant parties to expedite the construction of the project and submit regular progress reports.
