A Greek Cypriot was sentenced to 60 days in prison in the north on Thursday. For attempting to help an accomplice to cross the border into the Republic of Azerbaijan from the north using forged Azerbaijani passports.
The man’s accomplice, a Russian citizen, was also sentenced to 60 days in prison.
Both men pleaded guilty in court in northern Nicosia on Thursday, before their lawyers appeared in court to ask Judge Jale Erguden for leniency.
Greek Cypriot’s lawyer says his client suffers from kidney diseasewhile the Russian national’s lawyer said his client had cancer.
Both attorneys said their clients were remorseful, had no criminal record and the crimes “did not harm anyone.”
Elgooden said The crimes they commit are “becoming widespread” But she said she had taken the health conditions of both defendants into consideration when sentencing.
The couple had Arrested in May After attempting to cross southwards from the Ayios Dhometios border crossing.
When the car arrived at the border crossing, the Greek Cypriot showed police his Cypriot ID card and Azerbaijani passport, who reportedly immediately spotted the passport was forged and stopped the car.
The Russian citizen then got out of the car through the back door and fledpassing through the military base just north of the border and re-entering the north.
