MRU volunteer rangers rescued the ?Retrobilus ?Spiritus in Ramla Bay?The Malta Rangers received a call from the public early in the morning saying that a bird was seen wandering on the beach in Ramla Bay on Gozo Island and seemed injured.

A volunteer from the Gozo MRU unit arrived shortly afterwards and managed to catch it, while rangers from Malta were on their way.

The MRU said BirdLife Malta had been informed of the incident and had handed the bird, identified as a Crossbill, over to them for examination by a government veterinarian.

The MRU said, “No signs of shotgun wounds were found, so we hope the injured will make a full recovery.”

“People on the beach were delighted to observe such beautiful birds and our work, as well as that of other conservation NGOs, will enable more people to see such birds,” the NGO said.

“If you see an injured wild bird, please remain on site and keep your distance and inform Birdlife Malta. Our rangers now in Gozo will assist other NGOs if required,” the MRU said.

The MRU concluded: “It is a reminder to the Government that (two years on…) there are still no Environmental Protection Force police officers stationed in Gozo. This is necessary to protect Gozo’s wildlife and habitats.”
