A third sea turtle nest in Ramla Bay on Gozo ceremoniously entered the hatching season after hatching during a spectacular strobe thunderstorm on Wednesday evening.
The Nature Trust – Malta Economic and Environmental Foundation – Gozo branch said that during the night, 68 hatchlings emerged from their shells and found their way to the sea.
Over the past two days, volunteers on duty said they noticed that some of the shell-breaking/hatching process had begun due to movement beneath the sand.
However, “no one expected the hatch to occur on the 46th day and that was probably one of the most energetic nights,” the NTM Gozo branch said.
The third nest was built on July 13, after the turtle had attempted to build a nest a few nights before but was unsuccessful.
The Nature Trust – FEE Malta-Gozo would like to thank all the volunteers on duty, other volunteers involved and ERA officers for their help during the hatching process. The nest will continue to be monitored for a few nights.
The wildlife rehabilitation project is being implemented by The Nature Trust – FEE Malta, with support from ERA – Environment and Resources Authority, Lottoland Malta, Melita, Megastore.com.mt and AX ODYCY Hotels
