The United Party Government has issued a stern warning against the dangers of misusing cyberspace and sharing unverified information on social media. At a joint press conference in Lusaka today, Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Jack Mwimbu, stressed the need to use social media responsibly to prevent the spread of false information and cyberbullying. Mr Mwimbu noted that the misuse of cyberspace poses a major threat to national peace, security and social cohesion.
Mr Mwimbu highlighted the progress made by the government and other stakeholders in combating cybercrime and other cyber vices. He cautioned the public against spreading false information on social media, stressing that those engaging in such activities will face legal consequences. He also warned that spreading propaganda, hate speech and committing cybercrimes could lead to imprisonment of up to five years.
Also speaking at the briefing, Science and Technology Minister Felix Mutati reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting cybersecurity and arresting those who abuse online platforms. He revealed that the government is investing heavily in digital infrastructure to protect citizens, especially children, from cyber attacks. Mr. Mutati urged Zambians to verify information before sharing it online, stressing the importance of developing a culture of digital literacy and responsibility.
In a related statement, Mr Mwimbu criticised former President Edgar Lungu for his “irresponsible” remarks at a Citizens First Rally in Samfia. He reminded the public of the crimes committed during the Patriotic Front (PF) regime and warned the current government that lawlessness will not be tolerated. Mr Mwimbu also assured the public that President Hakainde Hichilema will not tolerate violence and any official found guilty of wrongdoing will face legal consequences.
The Ministers called on political leaders to act responsibly and avoid inciting unrest in the country. The Government’s focus remains on ensuring a safe and secure online environment for all Zambians while upholding the rule of law.
