Government suspends awarding of project tenders until ‘around November’

At the end of her speech in parliament last Monday, Finance Minister Peggy Selame tried to calm public concerns that Botswana could go bankrupt because of Zimbabwe. However, what the minister said minutes later, off the cuff, upset some people, especially bidders. She said that while no projects had been cancelled, government ministries and agencies had been instructed not to award any bids for now because of the poor revenue situation.

Earlier, Maun West MP and Botswana Congress Party member Dumelang Saleshando had asked Selame if the government would consider cancelling some projects and if it had any plans to cancel them, whether they would be identified. He also asked if the minister had explained the situation to his fellow ministers who are still touring the country and telling people that they will bring development projects in their respective areas.
