The Government, through the Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, is reviewing the National Gender Policy, the National Early Childhood Development (ECD) Policy and the Early Childhood Development Act to incorporate emerging issues and align them with national and international aspirations.
At the Strategic Document Management Validation Meeting held in Mponera, Dowa Province with the support of Amref Health Africa, the Gender Ministry’s Principal Secretary, Dr Nether Semphere Mgala, said a substantial consultative process had taken place involving review, analysis, emerging gender equality and social inclusion issues.
“Management review of draft policies and laws is vital standard government practice to ensure that policies are aligned with current gender issues, government priorities and international best practices,” she said.
They also said they want the draft document to be reviewed and approved, submitted to national stakeholders for validation and then submitted to the Cabinet for approval.
Mgala complained that the review of the draft policy was delayed due to funding constraints.
She appreciated the financial assistance provided by Amref Health Africa and said it would expedite the review process of the draft policies and laws.
Martha Moyo, Amref’s Health Africa Program Assistant, said these policies are crucial to address emerging issues such as sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), promote gender equality, disaster risk management, and end adolescent child marriage.
“We support the approval of these policies so that they also benefit adolescent girls and young women and protect their rights in their communities,” she said.
However, once finalised and approved, the subsequent policy will serve the people of Malawians between 2024 and 2030.
