Macau authorities admitted on Friday that the number of gun licenses in the territory “will decrease” after the new gun control law comes into effect. Public Security Police Commander Wu Jinhua said that there are currently 724 people holding driver’s licenses in Macau, and the government believes that “with the implementation of the law, this number will decrease.”
At a press conference to present the draft legal system for the control of weapons and related items, the official concluded that the license holders in Macau are “police officers, other public service personnel and other social individuals”. Among other rules, the regulation stipulates “provisions to prove the ability and physical and mental capacity of the parties involved in handling weapons and devices”. It also requires “a personal interview when applying for a license”.
Everything is in order
In his speech, Executive Council spokesman André Cheong Weng Chon also said the regulation defines the requirements and conditions for the “installation and operation of facilities for commercial and industrial activities” involving weapons.
When proposing a legal system to control weapons and related matters in the 2023 Legislative Assembly, the government said public safety and order had remained stable since Macau’s return to China, and authorities had guaranteed “full protection of the safety of the people of Macau.” As a result, “the need for individuals to possess weapons for personal defense” had been greatly reduced.
The law and the administrative regulations proposed Friday will take effect on August 31.
