Tegucigalpa – Analyst Graco Perez said on Sunday that the government’s constant confrontation with international diplomats does not help Honduras’ international image.
“In my opinion, the ongoing confrontation with the US Embassy and now with the UN representatives does not contribute in any way to good relations and the country’s international image,” Perez declared.
This week, US Ambassador Laura Dogu and UN Representative Alice Shackelford both questioned the project to build a prison on Swan Island.
As a result, Honduran Foreign Minister Enrique Reyna came out to defend the project, responding to the US ambassador that cooperation is more important than accepting suggestions.
At the same time, he asked UN representatives to exercise “diplomatic caution” in their comments on the Swan Island prison.
Even Planning Minister Ricardo Salgado dared to claim that UN representatives came out to question the government when the US ambassador could not.
Perez believes that these confrontations increase tensions in diplomatic relations and do not benefit Hondurans living in the United States.
He said the government’s defence of the Swan Island prison was an excuse to distort people’s concerns about insecurity.
He suggested that the government should avoid continuing to create confrontation in the country, especially as we will soon enter the political phase.
He analyzed that the remarks made by senior government officials to diplomatic representatives sent a message to cooperating countries that Honduras was a country that did not want help.
Perez added that the actions contradicted the rhetoric because building a prison in a habitat protected by law contradicts the message of environmental protection.
He reflected that when the government makes decisions that go against the interests of the Honduran people, its explanation disappears because the prison does not benefit anyone.
When asked about the actions of Foreign Minister Enrique Reyna, he said he followed instructions from government advisers at home and abroad but that they were not in line with national goals. silver
