Gotan opens newest location in Hoboken, offering dinner service

A cafe that opened a decade ago in New York City and has continued to expand and thrive despite challenges, Gotan’s newest location is expanding into dinner service in Hoboken.

s story Gotan The store opened in a historic building in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood in 2014. Owner Rami Rosen opened the store on the ground floor of a supermarket warehouse building dating back to the 19th century and quickly became a hit in New York.

The cafe, whose name is inspired by the 2000s music group Gotan Project, quickly opened three other locations in New York City before the coronavirus pandemic hit. Rosen was forced to pull out to keep the flagship cafe afloat, but the New Jersey native decided to shift his focus across the Hudson River.

“I have to give credit to the people who helped us get this project done and believed in Gotan and me,” Rosen told Jersey Digs. “This project took over a year to build and it wasn’t easy for me or them, but we did it.”

The Hoboken store is Gotan’s largest store to date, spanning over 5,000 square feet across two floors. The 34-foot ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows give it a chic industrial loft vibe, despite being located in a modern development.

The space is elevated, giving Gotan’s cafe two distinct areas. The 4,000-square-foot space on the first floor is the main coffee bar and kitchen, with exposed brick and concrete columns, while the elevated lounge on the second floor stairs has 1,000 square feet of sofas and chairs, creating a quieter, more comfortable environment.

Since opening, Rosen has become familiar with the emerging Hoboken community Yuki’s Bakery 2021. The business spans Pedestrian Plaza The assistance from Gotham gave Rosen a chance to see how many people currently live in the area and what gaps could be filled.

“There’s nothing like Gotan in Hoboken — a large, inviting space where you can get healthy food, great coffee and plenty of room to work,” Rosen said.

On the menu, Gotan combines healthy, cooked-to-order cuisine with premium Counterculture coffee and beverages. Their signature dishes include the tuna avocado salad, halloumi and roasted pepper sandwich, or the Mediterranean chicken sandwich with tahini and unique toppings.

In addition to its all-day breakfast menu, Gotan Hoboken now offers dinner service. Specialties include fried chicken steak, Middle Eastern kebabs, grilled salmon and skewered vegetable platters.

Their mezze platter is a feast in itself and is big enough for a family, with six salads and sauces to choose from on a tray, like hummus, eggplant salad, eggplant puree, and more.

Although Gotan is new to Hoboken, it has already taken big steps to integrate itself into the local community. The cafe features works by two local Hoboken artists, who rotate their work every two months.

Gotan and Yuki’s Bakery also donate baked goods to local homeless shelters and have begun hosting meetings in the Hoboken lounge, while sponsoring PTA events at a school near the Weehawken location. These are just some of the many reasons why the expanding brand is so popular.

“We had a ton of business the first two days, but that’s a good thing,” Rosen said, noting that more than 300 people came through the store each day during the opening weekend, giving them a good opportunity to streamline operations.

Gotan Hoboken is open daily from 8:00am to 5:00pm, with new dinner service starting at 5:30pm and ending at 9pm. The address is 770 Jackson Street, at the intersection with 8th Street.
