At the end of June, Uroš Valič, a professional firefighter from Kranj, retired after dedicating almost 36 years of his career to firefighting and saving lives. He will miss his colleagues and the dynamic work, but he certainly won’t be bored.
Retirement is a special milestone in everyone’s life, bringing new opportunities and challenges. Uroš Valič, a long-time firefighter from Kranj, ended his nearly 36-year career in June and began his road to retirement. In firefighting he found the passion that has guided him throughout his life, and now he is looking forward to new adventures as a grandfather and nature lover.
Uroš decided to become a firefighter because he was full of energy. “I wasn’t an office worker, I had to make things run smoothly, and I really enjoyed it,” he said when we talked to him about his entrepreneurial experience. He started working at a time when working conditions were completely different. “Equipment, organization, salary – everything was a disaster,” Uroš recalls, but persistence and love for the profession drove him forward. “There was camaraderie then, just like today. I have had good comrades throughout my career.”
His path as a firefighter changed slightly two years ago when he injured his knee during an intervention and had to transfer to the dispatcher’s office. “Due to my knee injury, I have been forced to work as a dispatcher in the office for the past two years because I can no longer do interventions. But before that, I can’t wait to get us out of the garage and help.”
Now retired, Uroš devotes his time to his family, especially his five grandchildren. “For me, the month of retirement has gone by in the blink of an eye. It’s not without reason that they say you don’t have much time left to “retire”. I used to have a job and rarely had weekends off, and then you think about when you have work, not when you are free. It’s varied.” Uroš spends a lot of time in nature, especially in the market area, where he spends his weekends. In addition, he enjoys walking in the mountains and picking mushrooms, although this year he has not had much luck with porcupines and chanterelles.
Happiness at the end
After Uroš’s retirement, there was a lot of joy at the Kranj fire station. “Maybe I didn’t realize it at the time, but it was really great,” Uroš said. All the fire trucks’ sirens sounded, and colleagues, friends and family wished him good luck on his new journey. Music and dancing marked his last working day, and Uroš Valic smiled at the new victory. “I’m happy, I’m not bored yet, but I will definitely be bored in November, when the weather is usually bad and the days are shorter,” he added with a smile, while thinking about the future after retirement.
Although he will miss the team he has been with for almost his entire life, he is looking forward to the time he can now dedicate to himself and his loved ones. “The lads and I are a very good team, I must admit that. Teams jump on you,” he added. For Uroš, retirement is not the end, but the beginning of a new chapter filled with opportunities and joy.
