In Kamnik, they have wanted new sports fields for years, and after the Fran Albrecht Primary School is finished, they will also start to install an outdoor sports area. Now they also want the state to finance both investments.
Kamnik – Last Thursday, Kamnik city councillors at a special meeting approved the necessary documents to allow the municipality to apply for a tender from the Ministry of Economy, Tourism and Sports by Friday. They will apply for funds to build a gymnasium and arrange an outdoor sports area at the Fran Albrecht Primary School.
According to design estimates, the auditorium will cost 9.4 million euros, with a maximum of 1 million euros available in state funds, while the arrangement of the external areas next to the new school will require an investment of 2 million euros, with the possibility of half a million euros in co-financing.
The old and inadequate hall posed a problem especially for volleyball, a popular sport in Kamnik, due to its low ceilings, which is why Kamnik has been discussing the construction of a new, more modern facility for several years. Now they are looking for opportunities to obtain additional funds in the ministry’s tender. The new venue will have a capacity of 1,500 spectators and a minimum clear height of 9 meters, making it suitable for hosting competitions at the highest level.
“Taking into account the performance of our athletes, Kamnik definitely deserves a modern hall that also meets the conditions for volleyball competitions at the highest level. Now we have been given an opportunity and we want to use it, so we have accelerated the preparation of documents,” Mayor Matej Slapal told us. After a debate on whether a gymnasium is too expensive, whether Kamnik needs such a facility or just to solve the problems of the volleyball club, the councillors approved the proposal to define the investment project, investment plan and pre-investment design of the new gymnasium, and since there is no more space for a library in the building, the current building permit must be changed.
The mayor and the city government’s senior adviser on infrastructure construction, Bogdan Pogačar, said they could still decide not to build the hall if there is no funding, and they would also try to keep the price estimate as low as possible.
There was less controversy about the layout of the exterior, and the investment plan has been approved. If the bid is successful, they will start construction in the autumn.
