Foreign media quoted sources as saying that the US Department of Justice is considering pushing Alphabet to break up Google.

Sources said that after a US court ruled that Google illegally monopolized the Internet search business, the US Department of Justice pushed Alphabet to split up Google. If the Department of Justice pushes forward the split plan, the departments that Google is most likely to divest are the Android mobile operating system and the Internet browser Chrome.

Officials are also considering forcing the company to sell AdWords, a platform for selling text ads, one of the people said.

Less severe options include forcing Google to share more data with rivals and taking steps to prevent it from gaining an unfair advantage in artificial intelligence products, the sources added.

The last time the US government proposed breaking up a private company was 20 years ago, when the target was Microsoft, but the proposal was ultimately not accepted by a court judge.
