It is a heavy blow for the 9th Rodrigues International Kiteboarding Festival (RIFK), which will be held from July 24 to 28. Just a few days before the start of this major event dedicated to kitesurfing, the organizers have learned that they will not be able to see the godmother, Venezuelan Vrinda Hamal. The influencer and kitesurfer had to withdraw due to health reasons.
Although she was supposed to serve as godfather and godmother of the tournament along with South African champion Oswald Smith (28), taking over from Dutchman Jalou Langerie as godmother and French-Mauritian Luca Pito as godfather, the Venezuelan player found out three days before the start of the tournament that RIFK informed her that she had H1N1 influenza. “I would like to express my sincerest apologies for the inconvenience caused by my sudden illness. I understand the seriousness of the situation and the impact my absence may have on the event, especially given its international profile and commitment to partners. It is an honor to be chosen as RIKF’s Patron and I was looking forward to being part of this wonderful event. I fully recognize the importance of this event and am devastated that I will not be able to attend.”, she explained in a letter to the organizers. Vrinda Hamal also sent the medical report in which she was diagnosed with H1N1 influenza. “This is not just the flu, this is a serious illness. Even though I don’t feel well right now, it would be irresponsible for me to risk spreading the illness to other passengers on the plane and potentially spread it to another country.”she insisted.
Despite this arrangement, the festival will continue to host the classic RIKF events: two mini raids, A and B categories (men and women), slalom, the unmissable fun run (downwind) and freestyle (in which riders perform aerial acrobatic tricks). Beach volleyball will be held on the beach next to the C Rodrigues Mourouk hotel. Other events are also planned during this busy week in Rodrigues.
