In the run-up to Euro 2024, experts and tournament organisers expect the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has been in a bloody stalemate for more than a year, to dominate conversation. Popular support for Ukraine is waning in Europe—and far-right parties are on the rise in many countries, with several supporting Russia or at least skeptical that the European Union and its member states should continue to provide military and humanitarian aid. Yet the war in Ukraine has barely featured in coverage of this World Cup. Now that Ukraine is out—out with four points but fourth in its group on goal difference—Russia’s invasion is unlikely to receive further coverage or be factored into the narrative. In this episode, we discuss why that is—and what it says about Western support for Ukraine. We also look back at key moments from the Copa America, discuss the Biden campaign’s efforts to use soccer to appeal to young male and Latino voters, and complain about the worst commentators in world sport.
