Israel attacked a school in the heart of the Gaza Strip in the early hours of Saturday morning, destroying the school where Palestinian displaced people were staying.

Rescue teams and local first responders spent hours searching for bodies and people trapped in the rubble.

The attack triggered strong reactions from many countries including the United States and the European Union.

The National Security Council expressed serious concern about the civilian casualties caused by the Israeli attack. The statement said that although Israeli officials said Hamas members were targeted, the United States wanted more details.

The U.S. National Security Council said the United States has repeatedly said Israel should take steps to reduce civilian casualties and pointed to Hamas’ use of military schools.

Hamas is designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a statement on Twitter that the images of an attack on a school in Gaza, now a refugee camp, were “horrifying”.

Buril said at least 10 schools have been targeted in the past week.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell also said, “There is no justification for these mass murders.”

Nearly 100 people are said to have died in the incident.

Brill said a ceasefire was the only way to stop the killing of civilians and release the hostages.

The Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip government said an Israeli air strike early Saturday killed 100 people, including women and children.

Abdullah Aguila, a survivor of the attack, told AFP:

“We were sitting quietly when a mortar shell hit here. Another mortar shell hit the school gate. Both schools were filled with civilians and displaced children. We have been collecting body parts for an hour. We are gathering children, it’s not fair, how long are we going to keep doing this?

But the Israeli military said members of the Hamas group were hiding in the school and ordered the action against the people and Israeli soldiers.

Qatar, which is mediating peace talks between Israel and Hamas, called for an immediate investigation into the attack.

The UN Special Rapporteur on the Palestinian Territory issued a statement on the X Network (formerly Twitter) accusing Israel of genocide. Francesca Albanese wrote that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians everywhere.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressed deep sorrow over the Israeli attack on Tebing School and the resulting casualties.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas militants attacked Israeli territory, killing 1,200 people and taking 250 hostages. The attack led Israel to launch a large-scale ground and air strike on the Gaza Strip.

According to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, the attacks killed about 40,000 Palestinians and injured 92,000.
