A new composting program is starting in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye to reduce organic waste, and my family will be participating. It’s awesome! We are excited to sign up for the San Pedro Town Council and Recycling organic matterand the Belize Solid Waste Authority.
The project introduced home composting kits to residents, enabling them to transform organic waste into nutrient-rich compost, reducing the amount of waste going to landfill and promoting sustainable development on the island. The initiative is in line with global efforts to mitigate climate change by minimizing methane emissions from the decomposition of organic waste.
Composting workshop

The process was simple, when the San Pedro Town Council put out an open invitation to join the program, we signed up online; participants met at the San Pedro Lions Club where they had a home composting workshop and ended up receiving our tool kit.
We went home and learned about which organic products can and cannot be composted, how to separate organic waste, how to use the Earth Bin to add and mix green and brown materials, aerate the compost by stirring it, and when to know when to reap the benefits of the composted soil we created. Fun! The staff at Recycle Organics was very friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to answer everyone’s questions. They are also traveling to the towns of Corozal, Belmopan, and San Ignacio/Santa Elena to set up a home composting pilot program!

We are removing organic waste from the trash, helping protect the environment, and creating nutrient-rich compost for our home gardens and plants. This project is a step toward sustainable waste management on the island, helping to minimize landfill waste and promoting environmentally friendly practices. Happy composting.
