Barbados and other Caribbean countries have been warned to take the growing threat of privately manufactured firearms (PMF) more seriously.
As rising gun crime rates worry authorities there and in the surrounding region, the Small Arms Survey, a project of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland, has called for more in-depth data collection on such weapons to help address the so-called threat to security and public health.
New report raises concerns about PMFDangerous devices: Privately manufactured firearms in the Caribbean,The report was published by the Small Arms Survey in partnership with the Caribbean Community Crime and Security Executive, the Caribbean Public Health Agency and the George Alleyne Chronic Disease Research Centre at the University of the West Indies.
The report adopts the U.S. government’s definition of PMF, which is “a firearm that is assembled by an unauthorized manufacturer, including the frame or receiver, and does not contain a serial number or other identifying markings placed by an authorized manufacturer when the firearm was produced.”
“Because most types of PMFs do not have serial numbers and are therefore difficult to track – at least by conventional methods – they are often referred to as ‘ghost guns’,” the researchers said.
