Valfromeev won the individual all-around event at the Paris Olympics, giving Germany its first gold medal in the discipline.

The 17-year-old Valfomeiev took first place in rings, ball and bat and second place in ribbon, earning 142.850 points in the four events.

Bulgaria’s Boryana Kaleyn achieved her best score in the ribbon exercise, taking second place (140.600), while Italy’s Sofia Raffaeli took third place (136.300).

Germany’s second representative Margarita Kolosov (135.250) barely won a medal, and Valfromeev immediately went to comfort her.

“Of course it’s a shame for him because he gave everything,” said the winner, who was born in Russia but moved to Germany when he was 12. “It’s always a shame when you finish fourth because you’re away from the podium. I’m very happy that I did it.”

The last time a German gymnast won a medal at the Olympics was in 1984, when Regina Weber won bronze.

The team competition is scheduled for Saturday in Paris.
